How To Taste Rum

Choose the Right Glassware:

  • Select a tulip-shaped glass or a snifter. These glass shapes help concentrate the aromas, allowing you to better appreciate the nuances of the rum. if you don't have any tulip shaped glasses, don't worry you can use a regular tumbler it just helps to direct the smell into the nose. However, you don't need to spend a fortune on a set of glasses as you can pick up a 4 pack for between £10-£15

Clear the Glass:

  • Pour a tiny amount of the rum you are going to taste into the glass and swirl it around, then tip it out. this takes away any lingering smells that may contaminate the tasting process next.

Pour an Appropriate Amount:

  • Pour half the bottle into the glass. This will allow you to focus on the flavours without overwhelming your sense

Observe the Appearance:

  • Hold the glass up to the light and observe the colour of the rum. Take note of its clarity, viscosity, and any legs (the streaks that form on the side of the glass when you swirl it).

Swirl the Rum:

  • Gently swirl the rum in the glass. This helps release the aromas, giving you a preview of what to expect in terms of fragrance.

Smell the Aromas:

  • Put your nose to the rim of the glass and inhale slowly. Take note of the various aromas, such as fruit, spice, vanilla, caramel, or oak. Try to identify multiple layers of scents. take it away and smell it again 2 to 3 more times so you can get a true tell of the rum

First Sip:

  • Take a small sip and let it coat your palate. Pay attention to the initial flavours and any changes that occur as it lingers in your mouth.

Consider the Mouthfeel:

  • Evaluate the texture of the rum. Is it smooth, velvety, or does it have a bit of heat? Note the body and mouthfeel.

Taste Again:

  • Take another sip and focus on the mid-palate and finish. Does the taste evolve or linger? Try to identify different flavour notes.

Add Water or Mixer (Optional) :

  • If you find the alcohol content too strong, you can add a small amount of water to the rum to open up the flavours or alternatively follow the QR code on the back of the bottle and find what is one of the recommended mixers for the rum. This is a personal preference and not necessary for everyone.

Take Your Time:

  • Enjoy the process and take your time savouring the rum. Note your overall impressions and any specific characteristics that stand out.
